Can I get a student Railcard?
Eligible students can save 1/3 on rail travel with a Railcard.
The type of Railcard you can apply for depends on your age and whether you're studying full-time.
16-25 Railcard
If you're aged 16 to 25, you can apply online for a 16-25 Railcard.
You'll need:
- A valid debit or credit card
- A valid UK driving licence or passport
- A digital passport-style photo

Railcards for mature students
If you're a full-time student aged 26 or over, you may still be eligible for a Railcard.
Students aged 26-30
If you're aged 26-30 and studying full-time, you can choose either:
- A 26-30 Railcard
- A 16-25 Railcard (mature student option)
Students aged over 30
If you're over 30 and studying full-time, you can apply for a 16-25 Railcard as a mature student.
Eligibility requirements
To qualify for a mature student 16-25 Railcard, you must:
- Study at a recognised university or college for more than 15 hours per week and at least 20 weeks each year.
- Have the mature student section of the Railcard application form completed by the University.
- Provide student identification, such as your student ID card.
Please note: Open University, distance learning and part-time courses are not eligible.
Mature students can only apply for a 1-year Railcard and must provide proof of study each year when renewing.
How do I get my Railcard form signed?
Online applications
Email your completed Railcard form along with a photo of your student ID card.
Use the Ask Herts contact form to submit your request.
In-person applications
Visit one of the Ask Herts hubs with your completed form.
If you're using a paper application that will be processed at a train station ticket office, remember to bring:
- A passport-sized photo
- Your student ID card
Forms cannot be stamped without the required photo.
26-30 Railcard
If you're aged 26-30, you can apply for a 26-30 Railcard and save 1/3 on most off-peak rail fares across Great Britain.
