Race Equality Focus Groups

Have your voice heard! We are seeking participants for a series of online focus groups examining race-related issues, as part of the University's Race Equality Charter work.

The University of Hertfordshire will be submitting an application for a Race Equality Charter (REC) Bronze award in February 2021. The REC is an initiative run by Advance HE which aims to improve the representation, progression, and success of Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) staff and students within higher education.

As part of this work, we are looking for participants to contribute to discussions around race-related issues. The online focus groups are an opportunity for you to share your views and experiences to help us learn about and respond to issues pertaining to the culture and processes of the institution. This will help with identifying key areas for development and actions to address them.

What will be discussed?

Key themes will include:

  • Diversity and representation across our student and staff population
  • Culture at the University, transparency and confidence to speak up
  • Surveys and how we can better capture staff and student views
  • Diversifying the curriculum
  • Racism and cultural behaviours 

Details and how to join

These online focus groups aim to reflect the diversity of UH and we would like to encourage students from all backgrounds and across undergraduate and postgraduate levels to participate. There will be one focus group for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) students only while the other will welcome non-BAME participants. They will last approximately 2 hours and take place in August and September.

Statement of confidentiality

All discussions will remain completely anonymous. Any quotations used in subsequent reporting will be anonymised. The online focus groups will be recorded but this will be for analysis purposes only. They will be stored within the Equality Office files and only the Engagement and Communication Working Group and Equality Office will have access to them.
