Student visa sponsorship after withdrawal
If you are withdrawn from your studies, the University must stop sponsoring your Student visa and report your withdrawal to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) within 10 working days.
If you want to return to your studies after being withdrawn, your Student visa sponsorship can only be reinstated in certain circumstances.
Can my Student visa sponsorship be reinstated?
Your Student visa sponsorship may be reinstated if all of the following apply:
- Your Student visa is still valid. You must tell the Student Immigration Team (Compliance) if you have received a cancellation notice from UKVI.
- Your school confirms to the Student Immigration Team (Compliance) that you can return to your studies and complete your course by your original visa end date.
- You provide evidence showing the extenuating reasons that led to your withdrawal.
When can't my Student visa sponsorship be reinstated?
Your Student visa sponsorship cannot be reinstated if:
- more than 60 days have passed since the date you were withdrawn from your studies
- you have already received a Notice of Cancellation from UKVI confirming that your Student visa has been cancelled.
In either situation, you must leave the UK and apply for a new Student visa to return to your studies.
Can my Student visa sponsorship be reinstated if I was withdrawn for debt?
You must meet all three reinstatement requirements above.
You must also:
- have written confirmation from Finance to the Student Immigration Team (Compliance) that your debt has been paid. In some circumstances, you may need to pay the full balance of your fees
- provide a written explanation of why you could not pay your fees on time.

You must meet all three reinstatement requirements above.
You must also provide the Student Immigration Team (Compliance) with a written explanation of why you did not attend as expected.
What happens after my Student visa sponsorship is reinstated?
UKVI makes the final decision about cancelling your visa.
There is still a risk that UKVI could cancel your visa after your sponsorship has been reinstated.
If you receive a cancellation notice from UKVI, you must tell the Student Immigration Team (Compliance) as soon as possible.
If UKVI has already started the process of cancelling your visa, you will be withdrawn from your studies.
What should I do if I receive a UKVI cancellation notice?
If UKVI sends you a cancellation notice, your previous Student visa sponsorship cannot be reinstated.
You must leave the UK by the date given in your UKVI cancellation notice.
You will not meet the requirements to make a Student visa application from within the UK. This means you will need to leave the UK and make a new Student visa application from outside the UK if you want to return to your studies.
If you were withdrawn for debt
You will need to:
- Clear your debt.
- Get approval from your school to return to your studies.
- Request a new CAS from the International Office by emailing international@herts.ac.uk.
- Use your new CAS to make a new Student visa application.
