How do I reapply for Student Finance as a returning student?
Applications for 2026/2027 Student Finance are now open.
To have your funding in place for the start of term, you should apply by 19 June 2026.
Apply or manage your application through your online Student Finance account.
Do I need to reapply for Student Finance each year?
In most cases, yes.
If you receive income-assessed (means-tested) Student Finance, you must submit a new application for each year you want funding.
If you receive non-income-assessed Student Finance, contact Student Finance England on 0300 100 0607 to check whether you need to submit a new application or whether your details will be carried forward automatically.
What details should I include in my application?
Most students
Your course details should match the information on your previous Student Finance application unless you have officially changed course.
You can check your course details in your online Student Finance account.
If you studied a foundation year
If you are moving from a foundation year onto Year 1 of your degree, continue applying using the same course/UCAS information as your previous application. This helps Student Finance calculate your funding correctly.
If you are entering your final year
If your original course included a placement or study abroad year that you are no longer taking, update your course details to the "without placement year" option.
If you do not do this, you may not be able to request a tuition fee loan.
How long does a Student Finance application take?
Most applications take 6–8 weeks to be processed.
You can track your application through your online Student Finance account.
If Student Finance England asks for evidence or documents, send them as soon as possible. Your application cannot be assessed until all required documents have been received.
Your application has been assessed when your status shows:
- Approved, or
- Payments Scheduled
Until then:
- Your maintenance loan will not be released.
- Your tuition fee loan cannot be paid to the University.
What do I need to do after my application is approved?
If you completed a paper application, make sure you sign and return your declaration form to Student Finance England.
Without this, your funding cannot be paid.
