US Federal Student Loans
The University of Hertfordshire will accept US Federal Student Loans from the 2026/27 academic year.

How do I apply?
Once you have received an offer from the University:
- Complete your FAFSA application
Apply through the FAFSA website.
You will need:
- An FSA ID
- University of Hertfordshire school code: G10525
- Check your Student Aid Report (SAR)
Make sure all your personal details are correct.
- Contact us
Email usloans@herts.ac.uk before the start of the academic year and provide your FSA ID.
- Complete your Master Promissory Note (MPN)
The MPN is a legal agreement confirming that you will repay your loan.
You must complete a new MPN each academic year.
- Submit your supporting documents
Send the following in a single email to usloans@herts.ac.uk:
- Entrance counselling confirmation (Direct and/or PLUS loans)
- Offer letter (if received)
- Passport photo page
Once your application has been approved, you will receive a loan offer letter. You must take this to your visa interview.

US Private Loans
You can also apply for a private student loan.
Where possible, we recommend applying for a federal loan first.

How do I apply?
- Apply directly through your chosen lender.
- Email the following documents to usloans@herts.ac.uk:
- Passport photo page
- Evidence of your loan application
How loan payments work
- Loans are normally paid in a single instalment.
- Tuition fees and accommodation fees are deducted automatically.
- Any remaining funds are paid to you through Convera.
Before funds can be released, you must:
- Open a UK bank account
- Provide your bank details through Convera
Important information
- The amount you receive in GBP will vary depending on exchange rates.
- You will receive an email when your payment is ready.
- You can reduce or cancel your loan before payment is made.
If you do not cancel your loan in time, you will still be responsible for repaying the loan and any interest charged.

- First semester: October 2025
- Second semester: February 2026
Postgraduate students
- First semester: October 2025
- Second semester: February 2026
- Third semester: May 2026
