Getting started with the Careers and Employment Service

This is the University of Hertfordshire's careers service; we provide information, guidance and advice to you to increase your employment prospects as soon as you start at the university.

ℹ️The Careers and Employment Service is available to all of our current students and graduates (within 4-years). Our services can be accessed in person, over the phone and online.

Where do I start?  

Your careers journey starts with My Career Portal – the University’s careers platform.

👉 Log in to My Career Portal to access a wide range of careers support, including:

  • CV checks and interview practice
  • Placements information
  • Self‑employment advice
  • The new Herts Excellence Award

From My Career Portal, you can also access Handshake, our interactive careers community which provides live vacancies, access to careers and enterprise appointments, employer events, and more. where you can search for jobs, including internships, placements  careers appointments to get your CV checked.

How do I access Handshake?

You do not need to register for Handshake.

The University has created a Handshake account for every current University of Hertfordshire student, linked to your University login.

Handshake allows you to:

  • Search and apply for jobs, placements and internships
  • Find part‑time and flexible work
  • Book careers appointments, including CV and application checks
  • Explore employer events and opportunities

How do I access My Career Portal?

The University has created an account for every University of Hertfordshire student and graduate (within 4 years) which is linked to their student account at the University.

How do I access CareerSet?

CareerSet is available directly through My Career Portal.

  1. Log in to My Career Portal
  2. Select the CareerSet button on the homepage

CareerSet helps you:

  • Improve your CV and cover letter
  • Check applications against employer criteria
  • Get instant, personalised feedback

👉Simply login to My Career Portal and click on the CareerSet button on the homepage.

How do I access Shortlist.Me?

Shortlist.Me is also accessed via My Career Portal.

  1. Log in to My Career Portal
  2. Select the Shortlist.Me button on the homepage

Shortlist.Me allows you to:

  • Practise interview questions online
  • Get feedback on your answers
  • Build confidence before real interviews

What support is available after I graduate?

When you graduate, you become part of a global University of Hertfordshire alumni community – and your connection with the University doesn’t end.

The Careers and Employment Service continues to support you for up to 4 years after your course ends, offering:

  • Careers advice and guidance
  • CV and application feedback
  • Access to vacancies and employer events
  • Ongoing use of careers platforms and resources

Careers and Employment

The Careers and Employment Service is open to all of our current students and graduate for up to four years after their course ends. We offer daily video, phone, and in-person appointments with Careers Advisers. Appointments are available on both College Lane in the Hutton Hub and on de Havilland in the Enterprise Hub.
