LRC Summer improvement works

Discover how we’re transforming study spaces, support services and facilities to better support the way you learn.

This summer, we’re making a number of improvements to LRC spaces to support changes for the new academic year and enhance your study experience.

Creative Arts Technology Suite refresh

The suite is being redesigned in response to feedback from Creative Arts students, with a wider mix of study spaces including booths, pods and open areas. The new layout has been shaped in collaboration with postgraduate design students as part of their second-year projects, giving students a direct role in influencing the look and feel of the space.

To minimise disruption, a small number of CTA PCs will be available just outside the suite on the ground floor while the works take place.

Engineering and Computer Science specialist software PCs update

We’re reconfiguring the specialist software provision on College Lane so that Engineering and Computer Science PCs are grouped together in an open area on the First Floor, making them easier to find and use.

Education resources moving to College Lane

To support the School of Education moving to College Lane, we’re relocating Education books and linked resources from the de Havilland LRC to the College Lane LRC over the summer.

Both the main Education collection and Teaching Experience Collection will move to the First Floor of the College Lane LRC.

De Havilland ground floor works

From mid- May to the end of August, essential works will be taking place on the ground floor of the de Havilland LRC. There will be minimal impact on your studies, although a small number of study spaces near the media preparation area will be unavailable. Any affected PCs and Macs have been moved so you can still access them. During this time, the Herts Academic Skills (HAS) office will be temporarily located in L280 and L280A. Thank you for your patience while this work is carried out.

FAQs

Can I still use specialist software?
Yes – specialist software PCs will remain available throughout the summer in open spaces, although there may be a slightly reduced number for a short period while changes are taking place. Normal service will be in place before the start of term. You can also access specialist software remotely using the Remote Desktop Portal.

Can I still access Education books during the move?
Yes – all books will remain available. As items are being moved between locations, availability at a specific site may vary. You may find it helpful to reserve items in advance and choose your preferred LRC for collection. Many of our resources are also available online, so it’s worth using the Library Search to check for e-book versions.

Where will the Teaching Experience Collection be?
The Teaching Experience Collection will be relocating to 1J112A on the First Floor of the College Lane LRC.

When will the works take place?
The work will begin in July and will be completed ready for the start of term in September.

While there may be some temporary disruption, all LRC services and resources will remain available throughout. Thank you for your patience while we make these improvements to your study spaces.
