Who is eligible?
⚠️Students must be completing an integral work placement as part of their course this academic year (2025-2026). Students will be able to receive a £250 non-repayable award which should be used to cover placement-related costs.
To apply you must meet all the following conditions:
- You are a current registered student at the University of Hertfordshire. Home, EU and overseas students are eligible for this fund.
- You are undertaking an unpaid work placement as an integral part of your course this academic year and you incur placement-related costs.
- You are studying a course from the following schools: Health and Social Care (HSK), Life and Medical Science (LMS), Schools of Law & Education (SLE) or the Department of Humanities within the School of Creative Arts
- You are a full-time undergraduate home, EU or overseas student or a full-time postgraduate home, EU or overseas student.
- You are undertaking an unpaid work placement this academic year, and you incur costs as a result.
Exclusions:
- Those in receipt of funding from the NHS Learning Support Fund are not eligible for this fund (this includes Master of Pharmacy students). This is because these students can submit a Travel and Dual Accommodation (TDAE) claim.
- Postgraduate students studying advanced placement courses are not eligible for this fund.
- Students who are salaried or in receipt of any other form of funding (including degree apprenticeship students) are not eligible for this fund.
- Students completing placements as part of a placement year in a sandwich course are not eligible for this fund.
How to apply?
To apply please register online via www.Blackbullion.com with your University of Hertfordshire student email address. Blackbullion is a financial wellbeing platform which can be used to develop learning of financial topics such as budgeting and investing. Should you require any assistance with your application, the Student Funding and Financial Support (SFFS) team offer one-to-one drop in sessions.
What evidence will I need to provide?
You will need to upload supporting evidence as part of your application. It’s helpful to collect this before you start.
You must provide:
- Evidence of your work placement that is a required part of your course (including sandwich placements) for the 2025–2026 academic year.
- If you do not have a placement contract or similar document, upload any evidence you do have.
- HSK students can upload evidence from POW (Placements on the Web) or a confirmation email, if available.
We will contact you if we need any more information.
Your application cannot be assessed until all required evidence has been provided.
When do I need to apply?
The fund may close at any time and will not reopen once the budget has been used, even if this is before the dates listed below.
Autumn term
- Monday 20 October 2025 08:30 – Friday 12 December 2025, 15:30
Spring/Summer term
- Monday 12 January 2026, 08:30 – Friday 11 May 2026, 15:30
The fund may close early if the budget is exhausted.
How long is the assessment process?
It may take up to 4 working weeks for the assessment to be carried out after you have submitted all your evidence.
How much award will I receive?
If your application is successful, you will receive a £250 non-repayable award. The results of your assessment will be sent to your student email address.
Receiving an award
You are responsible for making sure your bank details are correct and up to date. You must update your bank details to receive your award.
If you do not provide your bank details by 15 May 2026, your payment will not be made and your award will be withdrawn.
How to Update Your Bank Details
If you are successful, you will receive an email from techonenw@herts.ac.uk with a secure link to update your bank details. This will be sent to the email address on your student record.
- Use the secure link within 3 days. It will expire after that.
- Follow the step‑by‑step guide included in the email if you need help.
- Make sure your bank details are correct. You can use UK or overseas bank details. Incorrect information will delay your payment.
If your link expires before you update your details, email financial-support@herts.ac.uk and the team will send you a new link.
