What does a Tech Mentor do?
Tech Mentors are Herts students who help other students with all things digital. Based in the LRC Study Success Hubs, they help students develop the digital skills they need to succeed in their studies and future careers. You do not need to be an IT specialist to become a Tech Mentor. Full training is provided.
Tech Mentors help students to:
- complete the Get Started with Herts Digital checklist
- develop their Digital Essentials skills
- complete the Jisc Digital Discovery Tool and understand their personalised digital skills report
- install Microsoft 365 apps
- find and use University systems such as Canvas and the Online Library
- use digital tools relevant to their course, including Adobe Express
Additional responsibilities
As a Tech Mentor, you may also:
- provide support during digital assessments
- create content for the Tech Mentor social media channels
- help at events and activities run by the Digital Capabilities team
- support other digital projects across the University
As a member of staff, you'll also be expected to attend relevant training sessions.

This is a casual, on-campus role designed to fit around your studies. You'll be able to sign up for shifts and tasks that work alongside your lectures and other commitments.
Tech Mentors can work up to 15 hours per week. Available hours will vary throughout the year and may be lower during quieter periods.
If you're an international student, you'll need to work within the conditions of your visa.
Tech Mentor pay
Basic pay - £13.38 per hour
Accrued holiday pay* - £1.61 per hour
Total hourly rate - £14.99 per hour
* Accrued holiday pay is calculated as a percentage of your basic pay. The amount shown is an estimate.
