Support for students with caring responsibilities (Young Adult Carers)

If you care for a family member, friend or someone with a disability, health condition or addiction, you may be eligible for specialist support, financial assistance and bursaries through Student Success.

Am I a Young Adult Carer?

You may be a Young Adult Carer if you are aged 16 to 25 and help care for a family member, friend or another person with:

  • a disability
  • a physical health condition
  • a mental health condition
  • an addiction

This support does not apply to students caring for their own child.

What support is available?

The Student Success Team is here to support you throughout your time at Herts and help you succeed in your studies.

Support may include:

  • a dedicated point of contact
  • personalised advice and guidance
  • support with a Study Needs Agreement where appropriate
  • access to opportunities, events and activities available through Student Success
  • assistance with the provision of a laptop to support your studies

Financial support and bursaries

If you are eligible, you may receive:

Young Adult Carer Bursary

A bursary worth £750 per year of undergraduate study, subject to eligibility checks.

For the 2026/27 academic year, complete the Young Adult Carer Bursary application form.

Student Opportunity Fund

You may also be able to access funding to support experiences and opportunities that enhance your studies and future career.

Parking support

If you have caring responsibilities, you may be eligible for a student parking permit whether you live on campus or commute to University.
