What are Hertfordshire Internships?
Hertfordshire Internships are part-time, voluntary, guaranteed remote internships designed to help you gain experience in a career area that matches your interests.
You will work on projects with a host organisation for up to 15 hours per week over 8 weeks.
Because the internships are remote, working hours are flexible and can be balanced alongside your studies.
You will also receive employability and career development support from Virtual Internships.
Who can apply?
The programme is open to:
- Postgraduate Taught students studying at the University of Hertfordshire's Hatfield campuses
- A limited number of UK-domiciled undergraduate students from underrepresented groups, in line with the University's Access and Participation Plan (APP) 2025–2029

Are Hertfordshire internships paid?
No. Hertfordshire Internships are voluntary and unpaid.
However, the University pays the programme fee and funds the career development support provided through Virtual Internships.
All eligible students who remain engaged with the programme are guaranteed an internship placement in one of 18 career fields.
What is a guaranteed internship?
A guaranteed internship means that all eligible applicants will be matched to an internship within six weeks of joining the programme.
To receive a placement, you must:
- Remain engaged with the process
- Respond to communications from Virtual Internships
- Complete any required application activities
What is the application deadline?
Internships start throughout the year, with one or two start dates available each month.
Each start date has its own application deadline.
You should apply at least seven weeks before your preferred start date to allow enough time to secure your placement.
What is the application process?
To apply, you must complete an application through the University of Hertfordshire's dedicated Virtual Internships link.
As part of the application, you will:
- Create a profile
- Submit a short video introduction

They match students with internship opportunities and provide employability support throughout the programme.
What should I do if I’m asked to pay?
You should not pay for your internship.
The University covers the full programme cost for POstgraduate Taught students.
If you are asked to pay, you have probably used the wrong application link.

- The email address used for your application

International students: working restrictions
If you are an international student, your Hertfordshire Internship counts towards your 20-hour weekly student visa work limit.
If you complete the internship during term time, you must also comply with the University's 15-hour weekly working limit for University-related roles.
These limits help ensure a healthy balance between study, work and personal commitments.
