What are Hertfordshire Internships?
These are part-time, voluntary, guaranteed, remote internships meant to help you gain work experience in a relevant career field. The programme involves interning with a host company supervisor on projects relevant to your career field for up to 15 hours per week, for a duration of 8 weeks. The remote nature of the internship means you can have flexible work hours, enabling you to balance your studies alongside the internship.
You also have access to employability wraparound support provided by the team at Virtual Internships.
Who is eligible?
- These voluntary internships are for Postgraduate Taught (PGT) students who are studying at the UK Hatfield campuses of the University of Hertfordshire.
- Offered on a first come, first served basis. Please speak to your local representative for more information.
You must also meet the following criteria:
Postgraduate Taught (PGT) students for Semester B, January 2026:
- you need to be a fully registered, new student for January 2026.
- you will need to be registered and in the UK studying, by 19 January 2026.
What is a “guaranteed” internship?
A “guaranteed” internship means all eligible applicants are guaranteed to secure an internship within 6 weeks of enrolling in the programme. The only requirements are to communicate proactively with the team at Virtual Internships and to remain engaged with the process.
What is the application deadline?
- These internships start on a rolling basis, so there are typically 1 to 2 start dates each month.
- Each start date has its own application deadline.
- To allow the team at Virtual Internships enough time to help you secure an internship, you must submit your application at least 7 weeks prior to the start date you have selected.
What is the application process?
To apply for the Hertfordshire Internships programme, you must complete an application using the link specifically created for University of Hertfordshire students. The application involves creating a profile and submitting a video introduction.

When applying for Hertfordshire Internships, you can choose from 18 different career fields.

What are “Virtual Internships”?
Virtual Internships are the delivery partner that the University of Hertfordshire is working alongside to provide guaranteed internships to all eligible applicants.
What should I do if I’m asked to pay for Virtual Internships?
ℹ️ You do not need to pay. The University of Hertfordshire covers the full cost for Postgraduate Taught students.
- If you are asked to pay, it usually means you signed up using the wrong link.
- Email careers@herts.ac.uk with your student ID and the email you used to apply, and the team will help fix the issue.

International students - working restrictions?
ℹ️For international students undertaking a Hertfordshire Internship, it will count towards your 20 hours per week student visa working restrictions.
If you do the internship during term time, you need to abide by the 15 hour a week work limit that all Hertfordshire students are required to adhere to when working in roles associated with the University. This is to ensure you maintain a good work, study, life balance.
