About our targeted counselling support
Although counselling support is available to all Herts students, we know that postgraduate research can bring its own unique set of challenges. It may be that you are having difficulties within your supervisor / student relationship[MS4] , your research may not be going to plan, you’re not experiencing the level of autonomy you expected, or you are struggling with competition, among others.
Our free and confidential counselling service can provide a space for you to explore how you feel, to understand what may be causing any issues or difficulties, and to help you identify solutions to move forward. Counsellors will not tell you what to do, but we can help you think about your difficulties from a different perspective.

How to find self-help resources
Our services are always available should you need them; however, if you would rather find support services outside of Student Wellbeing, you can have a look at the postgraduate research students’ self-help page or visit the Mind mental health charity website for additional guidance and support.
You can use any combination of services in whatever way that works best for you – our goal is always to support your wellbeing and success, however we can.
Disability support
Our disability advisers offer specialist advice and guidance, ensuring that any adjustments you need are tailored to your specific requirements and academic discipline.
We can help you source additional support, such as specialist software and help with study skills, and can guide you in organising individualised adjustments to vivas so that you can best demonstrate your skills at that level.
We know that not all disabilities are visible, and not all people who have difficulties consider themselves disabled. You do not need to have a diagnosis in order to contact us.
You can use our Study Related Support form to get in touch and to learn how we can support your success.
Mental Health Advisors
Our mental health advisors are here to help you manage your mental health alongside your academic journey. We support those with or without a mental health diagnosis by:
- Helping you to understand your mental health and to build coping strategies;
- Supporting you to open a conversation about your mental health with your doctor, if you choose to;
- Signposting to additional support.
If you have a confirmed mental health diagnosis, we can also:
- Facilitate joint meetings with supervisors to make reasonable adjustments;
- Help you to access additional support such as Disabled Students Allowance, which will enable you to access specialist software and specialist mental health mentors.
