How can I register?

We strongly recommend that all students living away from home in Hatfield register with the University's Medical Centre, based in the Hutton Hub on College Lane. Please click on the form below depending on if you are a UK or EU/international student.

Register as a UK student
Register as a EU/International Student

We can register and provide a full range of General Practice services to University of Hertfordshire students who live within Hatfield.

We may register at our discretion other full-time students who live at a Hertfordshire or Luton address and attend the UH Campus regularly, however the services provided will be restricted as below:

If living outside Hatfield we cannot provide Home Visits and there may be restrictions on urgent care/out of hours care.  Some other community services may not be available to you, including community mental health services, midwife appointments or physiotherapy.

For more information about registering with a GP outside of your local area, please visit the NHS website

⚠️We would recommend the following groups do not register with us, but instead register with a GP local to where they live:

  • Pregnant women
  • Students with a significant mental illness, requiring community or secondary care support
  • Students with a family (particularly children under the age of 16)
  • Students who need to use community services (eg district nurses, health visitors)

If you haven't already registered, do this now.  Please do not wait until you are unwell to register.

Reception staff
The receptionists are your link with the rest of the practice. They may need to ask you medical details in order to work effectively. All information given to them is treated in confidence. We are proud to have a great team of efficient and courteous receptionists, however please be aware that they have a very tough job trying to balance the needs of all. We therefore insist that they are in turn treated in a courteous manner. Abusive or violent behaviour towards a staff member will prompt removal from the list.

Sick notes/Medical certificates for employees

Employees only need a fit note (sometimes called a sick note or medical certificate) from a doctor after 7 days off work sick (including non-working days). Hospital doctors or GPs can provide a fit note. They may charge a fee if the note is required before 7 days.

The purpose of this regulation is to avoid the necessity for employees with minor, self-limiting illness to use appointments with their doctor for the sole purpose of obtaining a medical certificate. We do not therefore issue certificates in these circumstances and a self-certification certificate should be handed to employers.

If an employer has reason to enquire about a spell of sickness, they are advised to write to the doctor, including written permission from the employee concerned and a report may be issued. A charge will be made for such a report.

Please refer to the government web pages for further information.

Certificates for the University

University of Hertfordshire students - if you are absent from University for less than 7 days, it has been agreed by the University authorities that they will accept a self-certification form to cover this period of absence. This is in order to reduce the demand on appointments and to encourage students to manage minor illnesses themselves.

Download our self-certification document.

Test results

Test results are given out by Reception, either face-to-face, or on the UH Medical Centre by completing the Online form
