What’s the deadline to pay my fees?

You can view the fee deadlines for 2024/25 on our Ask Herts page.

To see the step by step process for completing registration, we have put together two video guides tailored to walk home and international students through the whole registration process.

Check out our Online Registration video guide for Home students

Check out our Online Registration video guide for International students

Step 1 -  Set up your online Student Record

Once your place at the University has been confirmed, you will receive a Welcome email which directs you to your Registration Portal. You will be asked to create your online student record account.  You will receive your username and a link to re-set your password to something memorable, don’t forget to make a note of your password as you’ll need this to complete registration and access your learning materials.

Students returning to the University on a new programme of study will continue to use the same username and password.  Click here if you've forgotten your login details.

Step 2 - Login to your Student Record, access Online Registration (Stage 1)

Once you’ve set up your student account, you can then complete the first part of the process, Online Registration.

Login to your Student Record at www.studentrecord.herts.ac.uk

To begin Online Registration you will need your username and password. This will be the first thing you set up once receving your Welcome email.

Step 3 - Click on 'Registration (Stage 1)'

Once you have logged into your Student Record (if it is less than 40 days to the start of your course) you should see a link to 'Registration (Stage 1)' under the services heading.

If you can't see this link, contact us for help.

Please note, you will not be able to login to your Student Record unless you are within a 40 day window ahead of your course start date.

Step 4 - Check your programme information

All of the information on the 'Course Information' page is automatically completed from your record. Check your course title and if anything looks wrong, contact us for help, but don't worry about the programme start and end dates, as they may not be exact.

Step 5 - Enter your address details

We now need you to confirm your address. You’ll need to keep this up to date during your studies with us. Please make sure you complete your full address details (including the postcode) as it is essential for your safety and will make sure that any important documents, we send you will go to the right address.

  • Home Address - This is where you normally live outside of term-time. For international students this will not be in the UK. Please note, the postcode lookup will only work for UK addresses. If you live abroad, please enter your postcode/zipcode in the last line of the address fields.

  • Term Address - This  is where you are living while you are studying with us. If you're studying on campus this will be in the UK. Please try to give an exact address. If you are living in University accommodation your full address will be included in the emails we have sent you. If you are living overseas (e.g. if you're on a distance learning course), please enter your postcode/zipcode on the last line of the address fields.

  • Mailing Address - This is the address we will use when we send you any important letters. This won't happen often, but it's really important that we have a correct address so you don't miss any important communications. If you put down your term address, you'll have to remember to change it on your student record if you move.

  • Work Address - This only needs to be completed if you are studying a programme directly linked to an employer, such as a degree apprenticeship.

Step 6 - Enter details of an emergency contact

Please give us the details of a person within the UK who we can contact if there's an emergency. They can be a family member or a friend, so long as we're able to get in touch with them if needed.

Step 7 - Answer our HESA questions

All universities must provide regular statistics about our students to the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), so they can get an idea of the types of students at our University.

These questions are mandatory and there is an explanation available by clicking on each of the questions. If you wish, you can select ‘prefer not to say’ for sensitive questions.

Please try to answer the questions to the best of your knowledge - here is a brief explanation of each question:

  • Disability – Please let us know if you have a disability so we can support appropriately during your studies. There is an option to select 'information refused' if you wish to do so.

  • Disability Allowance – If this does not apply to yourself, please select '5 - Not in receipt of Disabled Students' Allowance'.

  • Domicile - This is the country you normally live in and treat as your permanent home.

  • Ethnicity - This is how you would describe your ethnic origins, for example 'White', 'Black or Black British: African', 'Chinese' etc.
  • Care Leaver - Please let us know if you are currently being supported by local authority. There is an option to select 'prefer not to say' if you wish to.
  • Previous Provider – This is where you studied before joining us at Herts.

  • Parental Education – Please let us know if your parents went to university.

  • Highest Qualification – This is what is your highest qualification to date.

If you are a Home student studying an undergraduate degree this will most commonly be ' A/AS levels (P0004)' or 'Diploma at Level 3 (P000) e.g., BTEC Extended Diploma (National)’. For Non-EU students on an undergraduate degree, it will commonly be 'Other Qualification at Level 3 (P0013)  e.g., High School Diploma'

  • Who is paying your fees? – While there are a variety of options, for most home undergraduates it will be '02 - Student Finance England/Student Loans Company' funding, but it could also be '01 - Self-funding (includes parental funding)'

  • Term Time Accommodation - Please choose the option which best describes your living situation while studying.

  • Term Time Postcode - This should be pre-populated from the Address screen. If not please enter the postcode of where you are staying while studying. If you are living in University accommodation your full address will be included in the emails that we have sent you.

  • Religion or Belief – Complete as applicable, if you do not wish to share this information, please select ‘prefer not to say’.

  • Sexual Orientation – Complete as applicable, if you do not wish to share this information, please select ‘prefer not to say’.

  • Gender Identity – Complete as applicable, if you do not wish to share this information, please select ‘prefer not to say’.

Step 8 - Additional details (career registration scheme)

These questions allow our Careers and Employment team to offer you personalised support with your career plans. You will be asked:

  • What stage you are at in your career planning
  • What work experience do you have currently
  • Where you would like your first graduate job to be located

Step 9 - Additional details (widening access)

These questions allow our Widening Access and Student Success team to offer you personalised support with your studies. You will be asked if you are:

  • A care leaver
  • Estranged (Independent)
  • A student parent
  • A carer

You will also be asked about:

  • Your household income
  • Your main method of transport to the University
  • If you are the first in your family to study at university

The team can provide; financial support, advice on accommodation, wellbeing and finding employment, coaching, priority access to opportunities to develop your skills, and part-time work.

Step 10 - Review your information and check the  terms and  conditions

This page shows a summary of the information you have entered. Check it carefully and go back and correct any mistakes. There is also a link to the University's Terms and Conditions at the end of this page. Please read these and then tick to confirm that you agree to them before submitting your details.  Please be aware that by completing Online Registration you are confirming your intent to study at the university.

Next steps

You will receive email confirmation when you've completed Online Registration. For most students the next step is to login to the Registration Portal and complete the remaining orange sections marked 'to do'.

Registration Portal

You can access all steps of the registration process via the Registration Portal. From setting up and completing Online Registration through to booking your face-to-face Registration appointment (which is only necessary if you are an international student and ensures you will become fully registered). Click the link above to access.

However if you're studying with the University of Hertfordshire via an affiliate, you may follow a different process to complete your registration.

If you’re a Mary Hare, Pen Green or USP student, then check out our Ask Herts page to see what you’ll need to do next.

Online distance learning student, visit our Ask Herts page to see the next steps.

If you are studying a Healthcare/Medical Continuing Professional Development (CPD) module(s), visit this Ask Herts page to see the next steps.

If you’re a Hertfordshire International College Student (HIC) you will be contacted by your administrators to organise a time to register with HIC on the College Lane campus, so you are not required to book an In-Person Registration Appointment with the University of Hertfordshire team. Further details will be provided by HIC after you complete this step.

If you’re a returning student, you don’t need to take any further action and your status will change to fully registered in your student record the next few days.

How to create your immigration 'share code'

In autumn of 2024, the UK government is replacing the Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) with an eVisa.

This video explains how to create a 'share code', which you can use to prove your immigration status and your right to work, rent, study, and qualify for certain benefits.
