Use a student computer
The Learning Resources Centres (LRCs) provide Windows PCs, Macs and specialist software computers to support your studies.
Most LRC computers have:
- Webcams.
- Accessibility tools and settings
- Software to support your studies
If you need help finding a computer or workspace, speak to a member of staff.
Headphones
Please bring your own headphones.
- All LRC PCs have a USB port for USB headsets.
- Most PCs also have a 3.5mm headphone socket.
- Wireless headphones are not supported on LRC PCs.

Save your work and log out
LRC computers automatically lock or sign out after periods of inactivity.
- Screen locks after 5 minutes. Computer logs out after 30 minutes. Device shuts down around 10–15 minutes after logout.
Always save your work and lock your screen if you leave your desk.
Change keyboard languages
You can change the keyboard input language on LRC PCs to Chinese or Japanese.
To change the language:
- Double-click the language shortcut on the desktop.
- Log out.
- Log back in for the change to take effect.
If a non-English language is already active, selecting the shortcut again will return the keyboard to English.

Borrowing a Chromebook laptop
You can borrow a Chromebook free of charge from any LRC.
Chromebook loan information
- No booking required; Loan lockers are on the ground floor of each LRC.
- Chromebooks are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Choose between a 4 hour or 12-hour loan.
- Chromebooks can be used anywhere on campus.
- Battery life is up to 8 hours.
Wi-Fi access
Chromebooks connect to the University's eduroam Wi‑Fi network.
Please note:
- Chromebooks can only be used on campus.
- They will not work away from campus or without campus Wi‑Fi.

Find a specialist software PC
Specialist software zones are available in both Learning Resources Centres (LRCs), with two Technology Suites in the College Lane LRC and one Technology Suite in the de Havilland LRC.
These PCs are prioritised for students studying Creative Arts, Digital Animation, Computer Science and Engineering.
You cannot book these PCs and Workstations are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Bringing your own device
You can use your own laptop, tablet or other device in the LRCs.
Facilities available:
- Free eduroam Wi‑Fi.
- Power sockets.
- Large external monitors on the ground floor of both LRCs.
Using power safely
- Keep cables tidy and avoid creating trip hazards.
- Use the power sockets provided at your desk.
- Do not unplug other equipment.
- Do not lift floor access panels.
If a power socket is not working, speak to Welcome Desk or Helpdesk staff.
