Returning student registration

If you're continuing on the same course, you'll need to complete online registration before the start of your next year or semester. Find out how to register, important deadlines and what to do based on your type of study.

Please be aware that Returning Student Registration will open from the 13th of August 2026, you will not be able to complete the below steps until this date.

If you are a Research Student, your returner registration opened on the 21st of July, please complete registration as soon as possible.

Online registration

If you are returning to a subsequent year of study in Semester A 2026/27, including continuing your course, on a study abroad year, or on a placement year, you will need to:

  • Log in to your student record here and complete Stage 1 online registration to confirm you are continuing with your course by Monday 12th October 2026.
  • A list of all University policies and regulations can be found here.

Once you have completed online registration, please identify from the options below which type of returning student you are and follow the relevant steps:

Returning Home/EU/International students

 This information does not apply to work placement or Study Abroad students. Please see Work Placement and Study Abroad students.

  • Completing registration: After you finish online registration, it may take up to 24 hours for your status to update to 'Registered' across the University systems. Make sure you complete all sections in the registration portal.

  • Registration issues: If your status does not change to ‘Registered’ within five days of completing online registration, there may be an issue. Please contact the Ask Herts Team for help. 

  • Student loans: If you have a student loan, remember that you’ll need to re-apply for funding each year. We will confirm your attendance to the Student Loans Company (SLC) once you have registered. The SLC will then release your loan.
  • Visa holders: If you are on any type of visa and your status hasn't changed to 'Registered' after completing online registration, contact the Student Immigration Team (Compliance). They may need updated immigration documents from you. To view the full list of visa requirements for all Student Route Applicants and Students please click here.
  • Attendance: When you return to campus, remember to swipe your student ID card at every teaching session to record your attendance. ID card readers are located inside all teaching rooms.

Work Placement and Study Abroad students

If you are going on a  Study Abroad year, or on a placement year, you must complete online registration through your Student Record to confirm that you're continuing your course. After completing this step, we will finalise your registration after the relevant University approval processes have been completed.

Student visa holders: Before starting your placement or Study Abroad year, please inform the Student Immigration Team at sitcompliance@herts.ac.uk 

Returning Distance Learning students

Your registration will be completed by your School, if you have any questions about your registration please contact your School directly. 

Returning Associate College students 

Your College will inform the University once you have returned to study.

If you 're receiving  a student loan, we will confirm your attendance to the Student Loans Company (SLC) once we have received notification from your College.

If you are progressing from a course at an Associate College to a course at the University of Hertfordshire, you are considered a new student and will need to follow the procedure for ‘New Students’.
