Commuting can bring its own set of challenges - from navigating public transport to balancing finances or caring responsibilities. This page brings together useful tips, guidance, and resources to help you make the most of university life at Herts, no matter where you’re travelling from.

  • Plan ahead: Check the app before you arrive so you know where showers, lockers, and refill points are.
  • Save money: Bring your own food and water bottle — microwaves and refill stations make it easy.
  • Stay active: Cycling or walking to campus is easier when you know showers and lockers are available.
  • Be sustainable: Use refill stations to cut down on single‑use plastics.

Travelling to Herts

  •  Make your money go further by getting a rail card or use discounted tickets on Uno bus by showing your student ID card. 
  • We only have student parking available on College Lane campus unless you have extenuating circumstances. However, we do have Park and Ride which is open from 07.00 - 22.00 from Monday to FridayFind out more.

Studying at Herts 

 Make sure to regularly check in with your personal tutor so they can understand your circumstances and how best to help you succeed. If you do not know who your personal tutor is, please speak to your School urgently.  

 We also have a Study Success Hub in each of our LRCs where you can get advice and support to help manage your time and workload. We would highly recommend arranging to meet with one of our experts to make sure you’re getting access to all the support you need to succeed.

Study spaces 

Each campus has a Learning Resources Centre (aka our libraries) which are open 24/7. We have spaces for studying including group and individual study spaces, plus areas for quiet and silent study.  

 Plus, we have spaces all over campus whether it’s in our cafes or locations like Chapman Lounge on College Lane or the first floor in the Atrium on de Havilland.

Financial support 

 We have financial support available for eligible students:  

  •  All registered students who are struggling to cost of living may be eligible for short term financial assistance grant (STAG)Successful applicants will receive a non-repayable financial award of £250. Further financial support can be found on Ask Herts 
  • Full time students who are funded by Student Finance England may be eligible for the Travel Grant. You must also be studying abroad for part of your course or attending a clinical placement in the UK.  
  • Our student finance team run 1-1 drop in sessions

 Extra help 

  • If you’re a parent with a young child under 5, we have a University Day Nursery which you might find helpful with caring responsibilities. You can find information including fees on Ask Herts website.  
  • If you are navigating additional challenges such as caring responsibilities for a family member or a confirmed estranged student or care experienced, we have additional support
