What's new in library and computing services

Here's a summary of the new services, improvements and any key changes to help you make the most of all your library and computing services at UH

Students are at the heart of everything we do here in Library and Computing Services and we are listening and continuously improving our services to help you make the most of your studies here at Herts.

Find the right study space for you

Our Learning Resources Centres (LRCs) are your one stop shop for study spaces, computing, printing, books and resources.  We’ve listened to what you’ve told us and have acted on your feedback to make the following improvements to our services and spaces to help you succeed in your studies.

  • More group study spaces - we know how important it is to have dedicated space to study in groups, so as well as refreshing some of our ever-popular bookable group study rooms, we’ve reorganised and refurbished our ground and first floor study and PC zones with some new and comfortable furniture to create some lovely new spaces for you to study in small and large groups.

  • Dedicated individual and quiet study - with a wider range of groups spaces on offer we’ll be freeing up our individual and quiet study spaces on the second floor for those looking for a spot to concentrate and focus.  We’ve also refreshed our quiet floor signage to better support those studying in the space and our friendly library staff will be on hand and proactively monitoring our spaces to help you find the right space for how you want to work.
  • Get the help you need when you need it
    • We've installed new low-level Information Points on all study floors which you can use 24/7 to look up books, find answers to common questions or pick up a phone to call our Helpdesk team for advice and assistance.
    • We'll have an extra welcome desk set up at the start of term with library staff and Wi-Fi Warriors on hand to answer any questions about Wi-Fi, books, computing, StudyNet, LRCs, and more to help get your term and your studies off to the best start.
  • Extra safety and security - your safety and security is really important to us and we've been working closely with the security team to introduce more CCTV throughout our LRCs to keep you safe at all times.
  • Looking after your wellbeing  - whether it’s curling up with a book or playing a game of Jenga with a friend we have lots on offer right here in our LRCs to help you take a well-earned break from your studies:
    • Our Reading for Pleasure areas on the ground floor of our LRCs (new to our de Havilland LRC this term!) are a perfect spot to take a break and enjoy your favourite read! You can also download the free Libby library reading app to browse, borrow and read our collection of digital magazines, ebooks and audio books.
    • Game on!  From Jenga, boules and Batak to yoga and table tennis, from mid October until Christmas our Herts Sports Village team will have a regular spot on the ground floor of our CL LRC where you can try your hand at some 'no sweat' games and activities.

We recommend using the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smartphone.  This is especially important if you are an International Student as the app will work regardless of location, phone signal, or Wi-Fi availability.

Plan ahead – make a note of our planned dates for IT maintenance works which are essential for keeping the University's systems safe and secure and don’t forget to visit our Service Status page for latest updates on our systems and services.
